Description:
Tall, elegant godwit with chestnut breast and upper belly; long, straightish bill orange pink at base; long legs. White wing-bars and white tail-base with black tail-band. In breeding plumage, male has rufous-orange neck and breast, with blackish barring on underparts and white belly; breeding female is duller.
Distribution:
Rare passage migrant through the north-western parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, very rare in Baltistan and Astore. Usually found near wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, bogs and grasslands. From lowlands up to 3000m during passage migration.
Behavior:
Feeds by picking and by forward-angled, prolonged probes. Locates food by touch or sight. Usually feeds gregariously in winter and on migration, using communal night-time roosts in shallow water. Chiefly feeds on invertebrates, most frequently insects and their larvae, molluscs, crustaceans, spiders, fish eggs, and spawn and tadpoles of frogs; also plant material, such as berries and seeds.
